Free Civil War Records on Footnote for June

Footnote is currently offering their Civil War collection free for all of June 2010. You can access their Civil War database here.  Along with many types of records such as service, pension, etc. they have maps and pictures.  You will need to registrar for at least a free account to view the images. I signed up for the free account a couple of months ago; all you need is an email address.

I viewed the database and was surprised to find pension application records for my great, great grandfather.  I had searched many times on Ancestry.com for pension records and nothing ever came up for him.  I assumed (incorrectly) that he never applied for a Civil War pension.

This is a good reminder to check several sources for specific records before making assumptions about any facts on your ancestors.  If your ancestor's name is coded wrong or missing on one site, it may be correct (or at least closer to correct) on another.  Have fun browsing their collection and maybe you will find success as I did on Footnote.  Happy Hunting!
